Lots of hair color changes going on! Along with Kate Beckinsale lightening her locks, Emily Blunt is also going blonde–starting off with a sort of ginger color which she debuted on the green carpet at the London premiere of Gnomeo and Juliet. People reports that Emily has been having weekly sessions with colorist Anival Morales at Essensuals London Salon in L.A. Morales is gradually lightening her hair for her upcoming role in action sci-fi film Looper.
I’m curious how blonde they will take it. I always wonder why actors don’t wear wigs for their rolls and call it a day–seems a lot easier. But then again, it’s a great excuse to change your hair color and probably helps them get into character. In this case, the character being a “tough girl, sort of Midwestern, lives on a farm. I wield an ax and shoot a gun,” Blunt told MTV News.
Looper was written and directed by filmmaker Rian Johnson who also did the movie Brick. And Loper also stars Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with both actors playing the same man in different time periods. I know a lot of people luuuurve JGL, but I don’t get it. Not that he’s a bad actor, but he’s still that kid from 3rd Rock for the Sun. I don’t get the hot factor, but maybe I’m just too old. Let’s add him to the Yay or Nay…
Yay or Nay:Joseph Gordon-Levitt? And Emily Blunt going blonde. Let me know in the comments!

Two things: I love that Michelle Obama wore Alexander McQueen to the state dinner for Chinese president Hu Jintao this week. I know this kinda falls into the “who really cares” category, since politics should be all political and not fashionable, but growing up with a glamorized notion of JFK and Jackie, I can’t help but love the fact that we have a first lady who is so fashiony and would even wear McQueen. Even though her choice is now being debated in the press because it wasn’t a Chinese designer, etc. It must be exhausting to have your clothing choices scrutinized like that.
Second thing: People are saying that President Obama may have dyed his hair a few shades darker. I’ve been wondering if he’d do it for a while now. Since entering office, his hair has been going gray, which is no big surprise since his job is a bit stressful. I think it’d be cool if he dyed it totally dark and was like, yeah. I color my hair AND WHAT.
Along with Khloe Kardashian, Lauren Conrad also changed her hair color. Reportedly to “brown”, but I’m still seeing blonde! Maybe because of all those blonde highlights in the front… Lauren’s stylist Kristin Ess told Us Weekly that Lauren has been thinking about going brunette for a long time. “It was just time to go for it,” Kristin said. “We’ve done so many variations of blonde in the past and it’s fun to do something new.”
They used Mila Kunis and Jessica Biel‘s “Brazilian brown” shades as inspiration for Lauren’s new color. To get the desired effect, Kristin first painted on a warm brown base, followed by highlights around the face and ends, and then topped off the color with a golden gloss to add shine.
Even though I don’t see a major change (or brown hair), I think Lauren’s hair looks great! It’s super healthy, shiny and beautiful.
What do you think: Does this seem like a major hair change for Lauren? And more importantly, do you like it or do you like her better with blonder hair?
I’ve been reading about Alex’s at-home ombre hair adventure over at her amazing site, Ego-Friendly, and I so understand the feeling of impulsive hair changes, whether it’s dashing out to Sally Beauty for a bottle of dye because suddenly you MUST change your color, chopping your own bangs on a whim because they’re driving you nuts, or walking into the nearest salon for a haircut you saw on the cover of a magazine (Julia Stiles on the cover of Elle circa 2002.) I’ve done it all.
However, I’m super impressed with people who lighten their hair at home; that’s one thing I haven’t done yet! At home ombre hair would be a good first step, since you’re just lightening the ends–and I guess if you really messed up, you could just dye over it. As you guys know, ombre hair is graduated color from dark to light, which sorta looks like you have really bad roots, but when done right it can look totally cool and modern.
In Alex’s ombre post, she references llymlrs‘ tutorial–well, semi-tutorial! llymlrs actually says it’s not a tutorial and just what works for her. All she does to get her ombre hair is apply highlighting dye to the ends–that’s pretty much it! She uses L’Oreal Perfect Blonde Creme Highlighting Kit, but in the U.S. you can use L’Oreal Excellence Cremelights Highlighting Kit.
DIY Ombre Hair:
Don’t use blonde hair dye for this process because you need major lift (i.e., bleach). Get a highlighting kit instead.
To get the ombre affect, you can apply the solution to the ends of you hair, let it process, wash it off, and then apply the solution again–this time focusing on the ends only. This will help you get lighter ends, hence ombre. Keep in mind that you can go as light as you want on the end because this is where you want your hair the blondest.
Another way to achieve this is to apply the color all at once, but apply the solution on the tips first, applying more solution here. Let it process and then move up toward your chin, applying more solution, but never going above chin level.
Toward the end of the lightening process, you can also pop in just a few highlights around your face, if you want to break up the color.
Always note your processing time. The longer the solution is on your hair, the more the color will lift. Begin coloring with a plan in mind.
If you’re more experienced, you can also use a hair color brush to paint on the solution. Focus on the bottom of your hair using the balayage technique that stylists use to create ombre hair.
As with any at-home hair color, always read the directions that come with the color!

BellaSugar is breaking down which celebs are making the right (and wrong) hair changes this winter season… First up, Lily Allen had a super smooth collarbone-length bob with side-swept bangs, but then she transitioned to a piecey, shorter ‘do. Which do you prefer? (I think they’re both adorable.)
Carey Mulligan took her classic pixie to mega heights with a pompadour. Which style do you like better on Carey?
Anne Heche has almost always been an icy blonde, but she recently transitioned to strawberry. Yay or Nay?
Ashley Greene is a sometimes-fan of extensions, as seen here. Which style do you think flatters the Twilight star more–the modern bob or the super long, wavy extensions?
Evan Rachel Wood should always have some shade of red hair, in my opinion. This year she went from a strawberry blonde to a darker auburn hue. Which shade do you like better?
Taraji Henson also has a love of extensions. She went from natural soft waves to waist length super straight hair. Which do you prefer?
You can check out even more celebrity looks at BellaSugar and vote for your favorites.
